Cheap Family Dinner Ideas for December
December is busy and grocery budgets get stretched by the holidays. These are the patterns we lean on in our December 2026 plan — no price claims, just habits that tend to keep costs down.
1. Make one big pot that becomes two dinners
A pot of chili on Monday becomes chili mac on Wednesday. A batch of meatballs feeds spaghetti night and meatball subs. Cooking once and eating twice is the simplest way to make a grocery list shorter.
2. Use bone-in chicken and sheet pans
Bone-in thighs are forgiving and roast with potatoes and green beans on one pan. Leftover meat goes into quesadillas or baked potatoes later in the week.
3. Lean on beans, eggs and pasta
Black bean tacos, veggie fried rice and breakfast-for-dinner are fast, filling and use pantry basics. Try our free peanut noodles or tomato tortellini soup.
4. Plan a clean-out-the-fridge night
Nachos, fried rice or rice bowls on Friday use up odds and ends before the weekend.
